Lining choice then controls warmth and how the garment slides on and off: taffeta and mesh stay light, while quilted or brushed linings add insulation.

Where a jacket needs insulation, fill type and weight are agreed as a technical decision and confirmed on the approved sample rather than inferred from appearance.
Pocket construction is the other major variable. Patch pockets, flap pockets, welt pockets and zip pockets each change the front balance, the pattern work and the cost. For utility-heavy styles we map every pocket position and dimension on the reference garment before the pattern is finalised, so spacing and flap shapes can be judged in person on the prototype.
