Straight-leg chino specifications buyers should settle first

A straight-leg chino is easy to recognise and surprisingly easy to mis-specify. Decide whether the leg width stays visually straight from knee to hem, how the waist sits on the body and whether the pressed finish is part of your approved look. For a clean-front reference like this one, the placement of the slanted pocket opening also affects how the hip looks when worn.

Buyer decisionSpecify or check
Waistband and closureConfirm finished waistband width, belt-loop positions, button location and the desired fly construction.
Pocket entryMark the slanted opening length, angle, pocket-bag depth and whether the opening stays flat when seated.
Straight legRecord thigh, knee and hem widths at named points of measure rather than writing only ‘straight fit’.
Inseam and finishSpecify inseam measurement method, hem allowance and whether a crease is required on the approved sample.
Fabric behaviorApprove a twill or other chosen swatch for hand feel and drape; agree whether post-wash measurements need checking.

Buyer decision: compare the worn front and side view in the base size before grading. The waistband should remain level, pocket openings should not flare and the hem should hang as intended. When wash performance is important, discuss a dimensional-change assessment using ISO 5077 with the agreed wash-and-dry procedure; no test result is implied here.

Questions buyers ask

Does ‘straight leg’ define the actual width? No. Send numeric thigh, knee and leg-opening targets with the size chart, ideally from an approved reference garment.

Can I quote from a photo alone? A photo starts the discussion; fabric, size breakdown, finishing and trim decisions are still needed for a useful comparison. See the reference garment specification guide.

Sizing & Measurements

Provide the waist measurement method, front and back rise, hip, thigh, knee, inseam and hem opening. Identify the base size and size range, and mark the fit details to keep or change from the reference. For elasticated waists or cuffs, agree how the relaxed and extended measurements are taken. Use the tech pack preparation checklist to document these measurements and construction details.
